Subject: Pass a budget in 2020 that prioritizes people and investments in our state

Message:

I am writing to urge the General Assembly to pass a budget in 2020 that prioritizes the people by making public investments in the future of our state. It is unacceptable that more than 33,000 children in North Carolina are currently on a waiting list for childcare. It is unacceptable that per-student funding is $380 lower than before the recession started. And it is unacceptable that the state has stopped the transition to managed care putting at risk the health care services of 1.6 million North Carolinians. Since there was no final budget in 2019, the state failed to address these important concerns. North Carolina needs to invest in resiliency now to protect families and communities from future economic and natural disasters. No family should have to choose between income and a safe environment for their children. No school should be left without the resources needed to adequately care for and educate our future workforce. And no one should go without safe housing, clean air and water, and the healthcare they need to thrive. I urge lawmakers to pass a final budget in 2020 that makes meaningful investments in the health of our families and our economy by allocating additional resources to child care assistance.
